Do My Actions Affect My Prayers?
Do My Actions Affect My Prayers?
By Ken Robinson
Prayer is one of the most powerful gifts God has given us. It’s how we bring our needs, our concerns, and even our silent questions to the Creator of the universe.
But have you ever wondered if how you live affects how God responds?
What if prayer isn’t just about what we say, but about the condition of our heart?
What if our character—the way we treat others, the way we walk in integrity—actually has an impact on whether or not our prayers are heard?
The Bible Says Character Matters
Let’s start with a direct verse from 1 Peter:
“Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives… so that nothing will hinder your prayers.” – 1 Peter 3:7
That’s not just marriage advice—it’s a spiritual principle. The way we treat people, especially those closest to us, can either open the flow of prayer or hinder it.
Isaiah 59:2 says something similar:
“But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.”
This isn’t about God abandoning us. It’s about how unrepentant sin creates distance. God never moves away from us—we drift from Him when we refuse to deal with what’s in our hearts.
Prayer Is Relational, Not Transactional
Prayer is not a vending machine. It’s not about using the right words or formulas to get results.
Prayer is relational. It’s an ongoing conversation with a God who knows us fully and wants to walk with us in truth.
That’s why Jesus said in Matthew 5:
“If you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift… First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.” – Matthew 5:23–24
God values relationships—and He invites us to value them too. Unresolved conflict, bitterness, unforgiveness—these things cloud our connection to Him.
Think of It Like a Blocked Pipe
Imagine trying to get water through a pipe that’s clogged. The pressure is there. The water is ready. But it can’t flow freely.
Spiritually, it’s the same. God’s power is available. His answers are ready. But if our hearts are blocked by pride, sin, or unresolved tension, we won’t experience the flow.
Psalm 66:18 puts it clearly:
“If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.”
Again, this isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being honest. Are we holding onto something God has already asked us to release?
The Good News: God Is Always Ready to Restore
If this feels confronting, take heart.
God is always ready to forgive. Always ready to respond to humility. Always ready to restore connection.
Psalm 34:18 reminds us:
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
There is power in repentance. There is freedom in confession. And there is peace in knowing that we can come boldly to God—not because we’re flawless, but because He’s faithful.
Three Practical Steps to Unblock Your Prayer Life
If you’ve been praying and not seeing breakthrough, here are three simple, powerful steps you can take today:
1. Confess Regularly
Keep short accounts with God. Be quick to say, “Lord, I’m sorry. Help me grow.”
2. Make Things Right With Others
If there’s someone you need to forgive—or someone you need to ask forgiveness from—take that step. It might be the very thing that opens your prayer life again.
3. Ask God to Search Your Heart
Pray like David in Psalm 139:
“Search me, God, and know my heart… See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
Final Thought: Keep Your Heart Clear
You don’t need to fear God’s silence. But you also don’t need to ignore it.
When prayers seem to go unanswered, take a moment to reflect:
Is there anything in me that’s blocking what God wants to do?
Is my heart open and honest before Him?
Am I treating others the way He’s called me to?
God longs to hear your prayers—and to answer them. Let’s be people who live with humility, integrity, and a clear heart. That’s when prayer becomes powerful.
